Despite interesting hints or clinical importance, chromium has been on the scientific back burner, but a new study of chromium and heart disease may restore some of its shine.
Scientists from the United States, Europe, and Israel evaluated 1,408 men from eight European countries and Israel. Nearly half were enrolled in the EURAMIC study shortly after suffering their first heart attacks; the other men had not had heart attacks. The researchers collected toenail clippings from all ten toes of each volunteer. The clippings were stored carefully until they could undergo neutron activation analysis, a precise way to determine chromium levels. The men were also evaluated for obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, smoking , and alcohol use.
When the results were analyzed, low chromium levels were linked to an increased risk of heart attacks: the lower the level, the higher the risk. the association between low chromium and heart attacks did not depend on diabetes or dietary patterns that affect chromium consumption.

Although many medications do an excellent job of lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels, most are much less successful at boosting HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels. Niacin is an exception, but it can have unpleasant side effects. But if lifestyle changes don’t help, chromium may be worth a try. Four randomized clinical trials have reported a benefit; from chromium supplements in doses ranging from 200 mcg to 600 mcg a day. More study is needed to sort things out, but since chromium supplements are inexpensive and safe, it is reasonable for people with low HDL5 to try them for two to four months to see if they can help, researchers says.
Step away from the remote, New research published in the Journal of Physiology suggests that just 2 consecutive days of slacking is enough to mess up your body’s sensitivity to insulin, possibly increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and some forms of cancer.
That’s all the time it took for normally active rats kept from using their wheels to develop insulin resistance similar to that found in their lifelong sedentary cousins. Yes, we know rats aren’t people, but the findings make sense. So turn off Jhalak Dhikla Ja and go sweat a little.
And talking of insulin resistance, don’t hit the snooze buflon too often either. Lack of sleep is bad for health, but too much of it can also be injurious. A Yale study found that men who slept longer than 8 hours per night had triple the risk of diabetes, compared with those logging 6 to 8 hours. Excess shut-eye may lower testosterone levels, leading to insulin resistance.
Viagra a remarkably safe drug, so a one-off event shouldn’t cause much harm. But there is one big warning: If you take nitrate drugs — or have a history of heart disease — you must never take Viagra. Your blood pressure can plummet, you can pass out, or you might have a stroke or heart attack. Nitrates include recreational amyl nitrite, or “poppers.’ While Viagra is a godsend to older men, theres no reason for healthy young men to pop a pill to get ft on. unless you have a problem with your erections, in which case you should consult a doctor. There is also a possibility that you may become psychologically dependent on the drug.
Surprisingly, smoking can disguise the superficial signs and symptoms of active gum inflamation, so that smokers are blissfully unaware of the impending problem.
Periodontis is one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults and pregnant woman, and the main cause of tooth loss in senior citizens. Current scientific studies reveal that gum disease can trigger heart disease (see ‘The it is Epidemic’) as well as pre term, low birth babies in pregnant women.
SIGNIFICANT SYMPTOMS
- Your toothbrush comes out red
- Red. swollen and possibly tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Gums pull away from the tooth (pocketing)

Eating less red meat and more fruits, vegetables and fish can help reduce your risk of venous thromboembolism, according to a new study. The higher the fruit and vegetable intake, the lower the VTE risk VTEs can occur in the legs as deep vein thromboses; clots can break off and travel to the lungs as pulmonary emoboli, wich can be fatal. The finding comes from the Atherosclerososis Risk in the Community (ARIC) study, which followed almost 15,000 adults for an average of 12 years Eating at least one serving of fish high in omega- 3 fatty acids per week was associated with a 30-45 percent lower risk of VTE (aditional intake did not lowerVTE risk further). A typical “Western diet” – higher in red and processed meat, last food, and high fat dairy products – increased VTE risk by 60 percent, compared to a diet rich in fish, fruit, vegetables, and folic acid according to Circuclation.
When hair is heavy with product buildup, add a tablespoon of baking soda to a dollop of shampoo; mix well in your palm, lather up as usual and follow with conditioner. Baking soda is a heavy-duty cleanser and also closes the hair’s cuticle, protecting it and leaving it shiny.
